            Zhuracpamba

ENGLISH

Zhuracpamba comes from the Cañari language and means "place where it begins". In this geographic point begins the Southeast mountain range and ends the northwest ridge, sacred place of meeting of the mountain ranges, where the Cañari people resisted to Inca Domain. There is a lot of archaeological evidence showing that Zhuracpamba has always been a place of pilgrimage, meetings  and spiritual integration of different people of the  north american continent. Its mountains have great strength, magic and secrets of the animal, vegetal and mineral world that habit this place. Land of free condors, which in their 300 km route choose to make their nests here.

For more than 300 years the Spanish family Valdivieso settled in these lands, mixing with the Cañari people  generated a mestizo people who share the mission of being the guardians of the history, past and present of this land. After many generations the care is maintained by Taita Alejo (who lives in a building with more than 275 years) and his son Taita Juan Alejo Océlotl Tonatiu and his wife Sabine Cihuatlcoatl.
Contemplation and care for nature are rules that are fulfilled with love and joy in this family. At the same time, a group of environmental activists meets in Quito, convened by the Conaie, being part of the guests Taita Alejo and other Native American traditions leaders. In this time they concluded that ithe moment to pay attention to indigenous people and traditions  and relationship with nature has come, for this the first thing to do is heal the hearts of people to then think about concrete actions.

This is how was born in Zhurakpamba the “Reunión e Integración de las Tradiciones y Medicinas de los Pueblos” (Meeting and Integration of the Traditions and Medicines of the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas from North to South), in order to learn the knowledge of nature in the purest possible form, with the heart, opening the possibility to realize that all the necessary lessons in human life can be transmitted by the elements, that is, by nature itself.

In 1992, Zhuracpamba becomes the first place in the contemporary world of South America to receive the Temazkal, the vision quest,  the dance of the sun and the interaction between the medicines of Aguacolla (San Pedro), Peyote and Ayahuaska.
